U.S. Public Schools Have Lost Nearly 20% Of Their Librarians Since 2000

On May 21, 2018, FORBES magazine published an article titled U.S. Public Schools Have Lost Nearly 20% Of Their Librarians Since 2000. This article cites my main article in School Library Journal in March 2018 and Debra E. Kachel’s and my article in Phi Delta Kappan also in March 2018. The article also cites Linda Hofschire’s and my time series analyses of the links between changes in librarian staffing and changes in students’ standards-based test performance. Our national analysis was the September 2011 School Library Journal cover story (though, alas, it is no longer available online) under the title Something To Shout About. A more detailed, Colorado-specific version of that analysis was published by the Library Research Service in January 2012 under the title Change in School Librarian Staffing Linked with Change in CSAP Reading Performance, 2005 to 2011.
