CRUNCHED: Our Region by the Numbers: “Star Libraries in the DC Metro Area” Infographic

In the June 1, 2014, Washington Post Magazine, there’s an infographic based on data from the Library Journal Index of Public Library Service/Star Libraries project.  Its URL is: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/2014/05/22/1f619b80-e200-11e3-9743-bb9b59cde7b9_graphic.html.

Thanks to Kathleen Reif, Director, St Mary’s County Library (Leonardtown, MD) for calling this to our attention.

One notable deficiency of this infographic is that it combines the Star Library data of libraries from different spending peer groups.  Users of LJ Index scores should be aware that the index scores themselves are only meaningful in relation to one’s spending peers.  They are not meaningful across spending peer groups.  This and many other issues concerning the design and use of the LJ Index scores and Star Library ratings are discussed at length in the FAQ found at http://lj.libraryjournal.com/stars-faq/.
